Here is how to compare tag or estate sales and auctions:
1. More
than 80% of the items in a tag sale are sold for less than what
they would bring at auction
2. 20-30% of the items in a tag
sale go unsold.
3. 100% of the items will sell for
no more than the tag price.
4. Some estate sale “experts”
over-price some high-end items until the final day of the sale,
where they can contact other dealers, friends or family, and
discount the item to them.
6. Almost always, estate sale
“experts” lack the expertise to properly price all items,
therefore full market prices are not realized.
7. Regulation and licensing of tag
sale service providers is almost nonexistent in the United
States. A harmed seller would have no choice but to sue in court
for damages.
8. Most tag sales lack sufficient marketing to attract the most
qualified and interested buyers, and the prices suffer.

Many items
bring more at Barrett's than rummage sales
Examples of items that
brought ridiculously more than the owner thought they were worth:
-
Depot desk- owner asked $400
at a rummage sale, we got $900
-
Oil bottles - owner thought
they were worth $50-60, we got $2300
-
Trailer load in July, owner
thought $400-500, we got almost $800
Green glass reamer, owner
had $.50 rummage tag on it, we got $14
Firestone ashtray, owner tag
$1, we got $20
Garage full of old toys &
stuff, owner thought "we were going to have to throw it away", we got more
that $2,000
The list goes on....
Sure, we get a share of the
selling price, but we all make money when it brings 10-20 times more than
expected!
